Cinco de Mayo

The fifth of May marks my fifth month traveling. On December 5, I flew to Guatemala City, stayed the night at the Dos Lunas hotel, then took a bus in the early morning to Xela. Kendra spoke to the taxi driver there in gestural Italian and he understood; we were driven to Norma's house and given rooms around her patio; we listened to the fireworks cracking all around the city, sounding like bombs.

Nothing is yours except the essential things – air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky – all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.

  1. The eternal appears less and less interesting the closer one gets to it.
